Uz Valley

a corner of the mountains all your own

Between the Nemira and Ciuc mountains, where the Uz widens into a lake, lies a valley of yew forests, sandstone waterfalls and long evenings by the fire.

Why here

Reasons to come to the Uz Valley

Poiana Uzului Lake

The first dam with buttresses in Romania holds back a 334 ha lake, up to 90 m deep, between two rows of mountains.

Marked trails

Nine of Bacău County's officially marked mountain trails climb into the Nemira — four of them start from Sălătruc.

Nasolea Waterfall

Sandstone steps in the middle gorge of the Uz — you hear it before you see it, and often have it all to yourself.

The yew forest

The Izvorul Alb reserve, with some 300 yew trees, is right next to where you sleep.

True wilderness

The Nemira Ridge: bear, lynx, wolf, capercaillie and edelweiss, across 3,509 hectares of Natura 2000 land.

Quiet

No resort, no crowds. A road, a forest, a lake — and nothing more.

The water

Poiana Uzului Lake and Dam

Built between 1965 and 1973, the dam was the first with buttresses in Romania. Behind it, the lake stretches for nearly 4 kilometres between the slopes of the Nemira and Ciuc mountains.

The forest

Nasolea Waterfall

Some 400 metres upstream from the tail of the lake, the Uz drops in steps through flysch sandstone, at about 500 m altitude. In summer, light falls through the beech trees straight into the water.

The seasons

Four valleys in one

In spring the valley wakes up in fresh green and the smell of wet forest. Summer is for the lake and long hikes. Autumn — for mushrooms and a gorge ablaze in copper. In winter the valley falls silent under the snow: what remain are the steaming hot tub, the little outdoor sauna and the fire in the stove.
