ATV on the uplands

The Uz Valley is perfect ATV country: wide meadows along the ridgelines, forest and oil-field roads branching up every tributary, and views that open up suddenly after each climb.

Routes

The Dărmănești area has 12 mountain routes for ATVs, ranging from gentle — family rides on wide roads — to demanding tours up to the ridgelines. A rental centre in town has 10 ATVs available.

Before you set off

• Always wear a helmet, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty — the mud is part of the fun.
• Logging machinery uses the forest roads too: keep your speed down, especially in blind bends.
• Respect the restrictions in protected areas — ATVs are not allowed on the hiking paths in the nature reserve.
• The best season: May–October; after rain, the routes get seriously more technical.
