The Uz Valley is the kind of place where children forget about screens on their own, no negotiating required: a meadow the size of a football pitch, dogs that come over to play, a gazebo with a real fire and a forest that starts at the fence.

At the guesthouse

Worth noting from the house rules: your own pets are welcome only with the hosts' prior agreement.

In the valley

• Gentle walks — the lakeshore, the Monument of the Unknown Hero (~20 minutes on foot) and the gorge towards Nasolea Waterfall, with no serious climbing.
• Horse riding — lessons for children and carriage rides at the riding centres in Dărmănești.
• The Târgu Ocna Salt Mine — the perfect day trip for a rainy day.
• Winter — sledging right next to the guesthouse.
