10 places to see in the Uz Valley

The shortcut for a first visit — you can tick off half in a weekend.

Poiana Uzului Dam
Nasolea Waterfall
The yew forest — Izvorul Alb
Bălătău Lake
The Târgu Ocna Salt Mine
  1. Poiana Uzului Dam — the first dam with buttresses in Romania; the view from the crest opens up the whole valley.
  2. Poiana Uzului Lake — 334 ha of water between the mountains; a mirror in the morning, ablaze in autumn.
  3. Nasolea Waterfall — the rock steps in the Uz gorge, a short walk from the tail of the lake.
  4. The Uz gorge — the road itself is the attraction: cliffs, forest and, after rain, the mist rising from the valley.
  5. The yew forest — Izvorul Alb — ~300 rare trees, right next to Sălătruc.
  6. The Nemira Ridge — for a day of real walking: edelweiss up top, bears in the evening stories.
  7. Bălătău Lake — the lake born of a landslide, in 1883.
  8. Știrbei Palace — Dărmănești — a category A listed monument from the late 19th century.
  9. The wooden churches — St Nicholas (1808), Plopu (1795), Lapoș (1813): old timber and anonymous craftsmen.
  10. The Târgu Ocna Salt Mine — the underground town inside the salt mountain, 35 km away.

How to split them up
